Collection Profile for:
Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority Herbarium (NHT-TPHPA)

The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) is Tanzania’s national regulatory authority responsible for safeguarding plant health and ensuring the safe management of pesticides. Operating under the Ministry of Agriculture, TPHPA plays a central role in protecting the country’s agriculture, natural ecosystems, and trade by preventing the introduction and spread of plant pests and diseases and by regulating pesticide use.

TPHPA’s mandate includes plant quarantine and phytosanitary services, such as inspection, certification, and surveillance of plants and plant products for domestic use and international trade. The Authority implements international phytosanitary standards (including those of the IPPC), supports export compliance, and strengthens border controls at ports of entry to reduce biosecurity risks.

In parallel, TPHPA is the national authority for pesticide registration and control. It evaluates and registers pesticides, licenses dealers and applicators, monitors use and residues, and enforces compliance to promote human health, environmental safety, and sustainable agriculture. Through training and outreach, TPHPA promotes integrated pest management (IPM) and responsible pesticide stewardship among farmers, extension officers, and industry stakeholders.

By combining biosecurity, regulatory oversight, and capacity building, the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority is a cornerstone of food security, environmental protection, and safe agricultural trade in Tanzania.
